If you are a beginner and looking to buy your first bike there are a few key points that you will want to check out before you go ahead and buy. I will start with the first and most important thing. Get some safety gear at the same time or before you get your dirt bike. There is a fairly good chance that you will spill the bike at some point in time so make sure that you are properly protected.

Now with the safety first note out of the way we can move on to the bike itself. You will want to make sure that you get a bike that is the right size for you. Frequently people will just by something with a smaller engine on it and think that this means it is a better bike for beginners. This does not mean that you should head to the dealer and ask for the biggest, fastest bike that they have. It just means that you need to fit the bike that you are going to ride.

When you get on the bike you do not want to have to struggle to touch the ground with your feet. You should be able to sit the bike comfortably while you are stopped without being in danger of just falling over. It would be fairly embarrassing if you are at a stop and just fall over because you can't reach the ground.

The dirt bike should also be tall enough that you can ride it comfortably. If you have your knees up around the handle bars you will have a difficult time controlling the bike and increase your chances of taking that nearly inevitable first spill.

Something else that should be mentioned here is that you need to be able to stand the bike back up in case you do lay it over. This should be something that you can do fairly easily. If you have to struggle to get the bike back up then it is probably too heavy. This is very important because almost everyone will end up laying their bike down sooner or later.

You also may want to consider buying a used dirt bike since it will be your first one. You do want to make sure that it is in good shape and safe to ride but buying used can save you from too large of an investment on a hobby that you may not like after you get started. Before buying used I would go to some dealers and sit on a few bikes to find some bikes that are the right size for you. This will help you know which bikes to go look at when browsing the sales ads.
